Fashion changes, Home Decor follows suit!

Fall fashions are changing and just coming into our lives. Bedding and Fall decor are changing too. We are seeing soft colors with wild accents or at least colorful pillows and curtains to dress up a room, especially the bedroom. We are just getting all our new fall lines and are going out with the old. Try pale yellow with browns and taupes with a hint of lime green or bright blue and some wild pinks.

I am so excited to show the new colors and trends to you. So hope to be all finished in about a week. In the meantime visualize this bed set in black and white sitting in front of a wall painted flat black. The furniture painted black also makes the room perfect for Crystal lights or frosted glass. Dream about your perfect room, so clean and fresh.

Watch for our new line of fabulous bedding.

Bed Bugs on the View

Today on the View it was all about Bed Bugs, nasty little critters, note the pictures of a bed bug and Dust Mites, they suggested you buy mattress covers and pillow covers to keep the bed bugs out of your bed. We need these covers more than ever now, as bugs are epidemic! Get out and buy some before you are infested too. You can find excellent Organic cotton, tightly woven, Mite Barrier Covers, that these critters can't get through. They come in all sizes for mattresses and pillows at www.sheerheavenluxurybedding.com. Just order on line. They feature a special zipper that won't let the bugs/mites through. Check out the Barrier Cover page. For some added protection, I would suggest that you always wash your bedding in hot water to kill any attached to the bedding. We are told to wash in cold water to save on energy but the bugs love this concept and will tell all their friends to come over and have a nice swim. Check it out and order today! I already have mine and they are GREAT!!! See pictures of the covers.

Bedding for the Dorm

September is fast approaching and it's time to think of bedding for the Dorm. Sheet sets now come in Twin Extra Long as well as the regular length in Egyptian cotton. Egyptian cotton washes well and is very soft and silky to sleep on, so is a good choice for the Dorm bed. A bed in a bag is another good choice for your dorm room as the colors are nice and will add a cheery touch to your room away from home. A bed in a bag comes with an alternate down comforter the whole set is easy wash and dry. Add a couple of wild pillow shams and you are all set to start to get back to your studies.

3 uses for Sateen for your decorating

3 uses for Sateen in your decorating adventures:
1. Many draperies come in a Sateen weave, usually called damask in heavier fabrics and sateen stripe in the lighter fabrics.

2. Bedding uses Sateen and damask weaves in sheets and pillowcases, duvet covers, pillow shams, comforter covers, and bed skirts.

3. Furnishings often have sateen or damask covering on couches, chairs, cushions for decor, tablecloths, and table runners.

Using these different weights and textures can add some real class and beauty to your decor'. If you can't find a big enough tablecloth set a sateen sheet and trim it down to fit the table and rehem it.

Sateen Sheets in Egyptian Cotton

The term Sateen sheets can be misleading, as it can be mistaken for Satin. Sateen is a weaving process that produces a satiny type weave and is usually woven in an all over or a striped effect. These are very smooth and satiny but will not last as long as your regular weave sheets. Do Not be misled by the term Sateen or Satin as both are weaves in fabrics, and can be cotton, silk, or a synthetic fiber. Sheets are usually made from mercerized cotton which has been treated with sodium to make them shiny.
You will find Sateen in Egyptian cotton sheet sets and bed in a bag sets or duvet cover sets. Any bedding that you choose in Sateen you will just love, try them and see for yourself.

3 Super Hints to keep the Washing Machine clean.

These handy tips came from the dryer repair guy. Who would have thought he would have such good hints for laundry and washing machine.
Cleaning the Washing Machine:
* 2 teaspoons Lavender in warm wash cycle. This deals with residue that builds up in the machine.
* Then follow up with a gallon of white vinegar in a warm wash cycle, do this every 3 to 4 years.
* Natural detergents act like fertilizer so you will need to do this cleaning more often.

Amount of Soap:
* Correct amount of laundry solution to use depends on our location, if soft water in costal areas use only 1/4 of the recommended amount. Harder water areas use double the soft water area. I find the box says way more than you need to use.

Laundry Loads:
* Sort by fabric weight rather than colors, this gives a better cleaning. Laundry soap companies want you to sort by color and laundry machine companies want you to sort by weight. The best washes are sorted by fabric weight as you get a better spin with the machine and thus a better wash.

The clothes Dryer has a History.

When you are drying your clothes in your beautiful clothes dryer, do you ever wonder how this wonderful invention ever came about. Maybe it was out of necessity, maybe people got sick of draping their laundry on rocks, hung on tree branches and finally strung out on a line to try and dry the clothes or sheets and pillowcases without having them fly in the dirt before they were ever dry.

It seems that a French man named Ponchon developed the first dryer in 1799. It tumbled clothes etc. as it turned over a fire, with a crank handle. I wonder how many clothes and pillowcases or sheets just burnt up in the process. You sure wouldn't want to put your pants on right out of the dryer!!!
Several other tumble dryers were developed before the 1950 clothes dryer emerged that actually looked like our modern day dryer.
In the 1890's an elaborate rack dryer was developed that sat on top of the wood stove. It wasn't until later around 1915 that the first electric dryer came into use.

Clothes drying technology has grown in leaps and bounds since then to the beautiful ultra modern machines we have today. But no matter what dryer we come up with, there will never be a duplication of the wonderful smell of clothes and sheets and pillowcases that are dried in the sun and the wind.
Here is my challenge for today: Go to www.sheerheavenluxurybedding.com and buy a nice sheet set in Organic or pure 100% Egyptian cotton wash it and hang outside on a line so the wind can blow it dry and put it on the bed and enjoy the wonderful eco friendly feeling and smell. You won't easily forget this experience.

Washing Instructions for Egyptian Cotton Bedding

Since my last blog on bedding for the Dorm, I felt it was only fitting to make up a washing instruction sheet for the care of your Egyptian cotton sheets and duvet covers etc.
1. Wash Your Egyptian cotton sheets and pillowcases once a week.
2. Use an Eco friendly detergent, most stores carry a line of nice Green Products.
3. Wash the sheets and pillowcases in one load, you can add the duvet cover and pillow shams also.
4. Use Warm water for the first 2 or 3 washings to insure they don't shrink too much. But after that I would use hot water to kill any dust mites or bugs that may get in your bed.
5. Rinse with cold water.
6. Give the sheets and pillowcases a good shake when you remove them from the washer and put into the dryer, dry on the gentle cycle and fold as soon as they are removed from the dryer. It keeps them smooth.

Your sheets will stay beautiful for years.

Some Eco Facts on Bamboo Sheets !

Why Bamboo? Bamboo is a perfectly natural organic product and does not need any pesticides or other chemicals. It is naturally antibacterial and allergen free. Did you know that Bamboo stays cool in summer and warm in winter so is Heavenly to sleep on?
Don't worry bamboo shoots won't grow up through your body while you sleep! That only happens in King Kong Movies.......
As for the Environmentally conscious person you will be pleased to know that Bamboo is one of the world's fastest growing, greenest, and most renewable resources. Bamboo plants can grow up to a foot a day and because they grow so densely, a forest of Bamboo has about 40% more biomass than a Hardwood Forest, so can reduce about 40% more carbon than a Hardwood Forest.

Some Bamboo products have Egyptian Cotton mixed in to make it softer, stronger and more absorbent. Some cottons grown in North America are processed using pounds of chemicals, per pound of cotton, more than any other crop uses. Some of this ends up in our clothing and bedding etc. but most of it ends up the the Rivers and flows into the Gulf of Mexico's Dead Zone.
Eating Organically is great for the environment but our clothing, towels, sheets, and other textile processes probably have a harsher impact on our world.
Sleep peacefully on vegan/animal friendly Bamboo sheets from Sheer Heaven Luxury Bedding. Buy Now! before it's too late.

While on the subject of Gramma's Coverlette, I would like to add that after 100 plus years you must think the thing is just filthy. Not so Gramma put that sucker in the big galvanized tub and put it on the stove and boiled the heck out of it, then squeezed it out by twisting it, then hung it on the line for 5 days to dry.
Aren't we lucky today to have that wonderful washer dryer combo, we would have Gramma's coverlette washed and dryed in about an hour, and very sanitized I might add, no leaves or twigs stuck in it, and not to mention no risk of bird poo!!!
ps. See what happens when Gramma leaves her wash tub outside to cool - Really big problem........

Gramma's Comforter

Comforters are soft, warm and comforting. That's why they are called "Comforters".
We loved Gramma's comforter, it had pieces of cloth of every color sewn on here and there covering worn spots, all sewn with tiny little stitches done by hand. Many of the pieces were washed out flour sacks, hunks of old blankets, or a piece of a sleeve from someones shirt. Our Gramma Elizabeth, travelled from England to Halifax by ship and overland from Halifax in a covered wagon to get to Saskatchewan and set up house in that wilderness. It spoke volumes about her survival skills and just how hard life was raising 4 kids in a little wood and mud house with a dirt floor.
The comforter was made with much love to keep her children warm and cosy on those long 40 below nights on the prairie.
That little coverlette is about 105 years old now and it is the absolute epitemy of the word "Comforter".

Cold wash Hot - What to do!

Do you remember your mother or Grandmother washing with hot water and everything came out so nice and white? Now we are told we must wash in cold water to save energy.
Well we saved our energy and now we have dust mites rejoicing and hopping all over our beds. They love those refreshing cold water swims they have been having. Try washing your bedding weekly in Hot Water, yes Hot Water! Hot Water kills Dust Mites.
After 2 or 3 weeks buy dust mite covers for mattress and pillows, then you will feel free of mites but continue to wash bedding in hot water always. You can check out mite barrier covers at www.sheerheavenluxurybedding.com/mitebarriercovers they have them with zippers that mites can't get through.

Dry Skin? Itchy Mess! Feel like a Dog!

Do you wake up dry and itchy, feeling like a dog? Organic cotton is so soft and silky that you feel like you are sleeping in down,as there are no chemicals used the preparing of the cotton it is free of toxins that irritate your skin. Did you know that polyester loves oil and soaks it up,so if you already have dry skin and sleep in polyester sheets and night wear you may be dry and itchy when you wake up. You can try cotton/poly for your sheets, or organic cotton or Egyptian cotton grown in Egypt. Or for pure luxury try silk sheets, it is also very kind to your skin.
Need new sheets? Check out our bedding.

Misconception over Thread count.

Every time you want to buy sheets you are confronted with the old Thread count problem, What to do! Thread count is the number of threads used per square inch in the weaving of the fabric. 300 TC is pretty low, but in an organic cotton it has a softness and strength comparable to a 600 thread count in regular bedding. Authentic Egyptian cotton comes in a wide variety of thread counts starting at 250 or 300 and all the way up to 1500TC. All are great quality and soft and strong. If you want durability in your sheets over all go for the 300 or 350TC. But if want luxury above all then go for the 1200 or 1500 TC as it is silky smooth to the touch because of the fine threads used to weave the fabric. All of these thread counts can be woven into patterns or dyed to colors and does not alter the thread count.
